I was limited by how much down pressure I could put on the side adjuster tool I made. One note - even after making a tool out of an old bearing race to tighten the carrier bearing adjusters, I could not quite achieve the spec'd total preload for the diff. It was also way easier to check backlash when the carrier bearings were preloaded. I'm not sure if it was the pinion or carrier preload that changed things, but one of them seemed to affect the pattern. I had taken all of the slop out of the pinion bearings, but wasn't really preloading them for the pattern tests. I think I wasn't giving the bearings enough preload on the initial pattern tests. Coast was not perfect (a little high on the ring gear), but not bad. Once I had it all back together, with the bearings preloaded, the 0.027" gear pattern looked much better than the 0.027" pics shown above. I disassembled and replaced the factory/original 0.027" shim.
